New News

2 weeks ago dad was in the hospital because of his arm, turns out it's a pinched nerve.  Dad will hopefully be starting physical therapy very soon!  He is still having a very hard time with that arm, and we got a stress ball and I'm trying to get him to use that more to build some strength back.  Other than that he is doing pretty good, his cough seems to be better managed now and not so bad.
Last weekend we did the smoking blues and jazz festival in Brighton.  Last year my dad and a couple of his friends got together and started a company called the 'Meatloafers.'  They bbqed ribs and made cole slaw and corn and sold it at last years event.  This year the guys decided to do it again and put 100% of the proceeds to cancer research.  I'll post the links at the end of this blog because dad was the highlight of the event for the men!  Dad was having a ball and he had a great time!!!!  It rained a couple times but turned out great!  He had fun, that was the only thing that mattered to us.  Although it is taking him a week to recover, it was still worth it.  Dad's story was on a local radio station, it really touched us that his friends did this for him!  It was an awesome time!!!  It was great just seeing dad do what he loves to do!!!!
Tomorrow (Sunday), there is a 5k walk at Kensington Metropark for lung cancer, we got a couple shirts made for our immediate family and we plan on walking/running (the young ones) to support dad.  I will also post pictures of that on here as well after the event.
We are doing alright, like always staying busy and keeping everything in order.  I will keep everyone updated (like I always try to do) about dads treatments and his progress!!!!!
Hope everyone is ready for fall and enjoy their weekends!!!!

The one from the radio is hard to link to so I'm just going to copy the article and post the picture on here:

BBQ Team Looks to Grill up Support For Cancer Research
9/9/11 - A charity barbeque team will be firing up the grill to help support cancer research this weekend in downtown Brighton. A charity barbeque team that goes by the name of “The Meatloafers” will be working to raise funds for the Huntsman Cancer Institute during Brighton’s Smokin Jazz and Barbeque Blues Festival which kicks off today. The local group of friends took their hobby of barbequing for family and friends and turned it into a way to raise money for charity since many are involved in different local organizations but things changed when their Pit Boss Joe Peardon (pictured) was diagnosed with stage four cancer and only given one year to live. Team member Jason Conrad Huntley of Brighton says not long after that, his mother was diagnosed with Leukemia and another teammate discovered his father also had stage four cancer. With so many of the team’s family members being diagnosed with cancer and this being their possible last barbeque together, Conrad says it was only natural that it should be an aggressive fundraiser for cancer research. Conrad says residents can stop by their booth this weekend, enjoy some great barbeque and support a great cause. Huntley says all of the proceeds raised this weekend will go directly to the Huntsman Cancer Institute and all funds go directly into research. The Meatloafers will be out at the Smokin Jazz festival all weekend. The Smokin Jazz and Barbeque Blues Festival will run from 5pm-11pm tonight and on Saturday from noon to midnight.(JM)

And here is a picture that I took of Mom and Dad as they were walking around the Festival!!!!

Its been a long weekend!!!!

Last week dad had his first chemo treatment of this round.  He did alright, but they said he had a reaction to one of the chemos.  The nurse told him that a human body can only take 8-9 rounds of this certain drug, well dad was on number 8.  The nurses said he did good and his body faught off the reaction pretty well.
Later on during the week dad had a pain in his left should which was getting progressively worse.  On Friday he went to urgent care, and he had a CT scan of his lungs, they didn't find anything and we ended up taking him home.  We had to go back on Saturday to get another CT scan of his brain and shoulder.  Everything came back negative (for more tumors), so this pain he is having is not cancer related.  It is an arthritic condition, he has lost about 50% mobility in his left arm and its very painful.  This week we will talk to the chemo doctor and see when we can see an orthopedic specialist about this issue.  This will most likely mean surgery.  BUT...dad doesn't want to do the surgery quite yet and mess up his chemo schedule.
This has turned into a very painful situation for all of us to watch, we are doing our best to make him comfortable and relaxed.  We are attempting to keep his pain under control and keep up with a regular schedule for his medications.  Dad is still having a hard time getting a good nights sleep, which is affecting everything!
Please everyone, keep dad in your daily thoughts and prayers!!!  I will keep everyone updated on what we find out later on during the week!!!!

Finally some news!!!!

Ok, I want to apologize for it taking me so long to update... I know a lot of people depend on this to learn about my dad.  For the past month and a half we have been fighting an 'infection' and haven't really gotten any news.  Since then my dad hasn't gotten better, in fact he has gotten worse.  We have excused the pulmonary specialist that wasn't really doing much for dad from our services.  Dad had a PET scan last week and an appointment with his cancer doctor.  We learned that the spots on his liver have grown and there is a lymph node by his stomach that is now inflamed.  He will be starting chemo again this week.  Dad was also told his cough is just something that is not going to go away.  So we are all still learning how to deal with that as well.
We are all doing good, just staying busy working.  I am now officially full time and super excited about that!  Dad has been getting out more and doing more activities, which is great!!!!  I will keep you updated on how he responds to this chemo, and how everything is going.  Have a good week!!!!

Sorry it's been so long!!!!

Well we have been really busy lately!!!  Last week we had a bunch of family and friends out for the weekend!  We all were at the lake and had a blast!!  Had lots of food, laughter, and great memories were made!!! Dad did really good!  He was outside and hanging out with the family the whole time!  Although it really tuckered him out, we were still really proud of him for being out there that much!
Dad has been doing alright, we are still fighting the cough :(... Tomorrow (Thursday) he has a brochoscopy (where they take a camera into his lungs to see what is in it).  The x-rays showed that there is something in there, but it could be a number of things!  So they will be doing that and hopefully we will have some more answers shortly!
We are still learning each day how to deal with all of this.  Its a daily battle but we are all doing well!  We are greatful for the people who are in our lives!
I will update when we find out his results from his brochoscopy!

A little of this...and a little of that!!!

So we got news back about dad, and he doesn't have pneumonia...he has an infection in his lungs.  We are not completely sure what kind of infection or what it is quite yet.  He is on more antibiotics and his chemo has been postponed till the infection is gone!  He got out today, but came home and was really tired.  This infection is really knocking it out of him!
I also wanted to put out some information about the 4th of July.  This year we are going to try to have a family & Friends reunion at Lake Chemung.  We have rented out the lake property and will have it all through the week of the 4th!  I would like to extend the invitation to everyone!  I will have more information, and a better invite next week!  I know my cousin will be joining us from TN, and I will have to find out who else from our family is coming up!  We just plan on having food, and spending time with the people who matter the most to us!
Have a great night! Sorry no quote tonight!!!!

Sooo...

So this past week has been very interesting!  Dad went in for a check up at the beginning of the week, and they thought he had pneumonia (fluid in the lungs).  He was given and CT scan and we are still waiting on the results.  He has been on antibiotics and will continue his chemo this Thursday!  In my dads state right now pneumonia can be very bad!  Its not good when your healthy, but its even worse when you have cancer! He has been doing better since he has been on the antibiotics, his cough is not as bad as it was a couple weeks ago!
We still have been monitoring his blood pressure, and the doctor has seen our log!  The doctor doesn't have any concerns with blood pressure at this moment in time, which is a good thing!
We are still learning a little more everyday on how to deal with all of this.  And we appreciate everyone in our lives at this moment in time who are helping us through this hard time!!!
Hope  everyone is enjoying this weather!!!!!

Up Hill Battle

So dad has been doing alright lately.  Unfortunatly he has been having more bad days than good days.  His parents (my grandparents) came over last week and we all had lunch together, and Grandma made him a pineapple upside down cake-dads favorite.  But he hasn't been out much since then.  He has been dealing with his cough which is showing its ugly face again, and he has been really tired and wore out.  Earlier today we went and got his blood work for his doctor appointment and chemo next week.  That took a lot out of him!  We have been watching his blood pressure really close and keeping a daily log of the results, something I plan on taking to the doctors appointment on Wednesday!
Tomorrow dad will be getting out of the house for a little bit, we have a memorial service for someone who is very close to us.  Our thoughts are with the Lewis Family!!!!!!!!
Other than that, nothing really has changed since I last wrote... we are all doing fine and just dealing with everything day by day!
Everyone have a great Memorial Day!! Hopefully the good weather stays here for a while!!!!

Finally some hopeful news!!!!

So dad finished his first round of this chemo yesterday.  He also had an appointment with the doctor as well.  The doctor mentioned something that we could possibly go in and cut out the cancer spots on his liver.  This is not saying its going to happen, or its a strong possibility....but it is out there, and they are talking with surgeons about it.  That made us all very excited!
Dad has been doing really great this time around with the chemo.  He gets the shakes for 2 days after his chemo, and he gets tired a lot easier, but his voice is a lot more...well....he just sounds happier-not really sure how to put it into words right now.  He kind of knows what to expect in the days following the treatment, which makes it a little more tolerable I guess you can say.  Although we all agree we do not like chemo days, but for right now we will deal with it! He is out doing more things, and staying active.
We had the clean up at the lake last weekend, and he came out for a little bit and went to the board meeting the following day.  Which is great for my dad!  He has also been getting out of the house more and spending a little more time up at the lodge with Bob!
Speaking of Bob.... I would like everyone to know what a life saver he has been to us!!!!!  He is always there when we need it, and he is keeping dad as busy as he can!  We defiantly appreciate it!  Thank you very much!!!!!
Like I say in many of my blogs...we appreciate what everyone has been doing for us!  We love our great support system!
I would like to say before I finish (and I will finish with a quote-that my mom so kindly pointed out that I have been lacking).  I would like to send our thoughts and prayers to a family friend (part of our family really)...Wanda Koval!  You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers as well!!!!

latest update!!!

So dad got the results to his PET scan yesterday!!!  Good news!!!  The tumor in his lung has shrunk!!!!  He will be starting chemo again next week.  He will do two weeks on, and 1 week off.  This will be a different type of chemo, and will affect his blood counts a lot more than the last round!  We will have to keep an eye on that and continue to watch him really close!  This round of chemo will help shrink (we are hoping) the spots on his liver!  He has his cough again :(, but we are doing alright with managing that as well.  He is getting out of the house more often now which is really great!!
My sisters and brother and I  just got back from a great trip from Tennessee!!  We went down there for the Memphis in May concert and had a blast!  It was a nice little get away, but it is great to be back home!
I will continue to keep everyone informed on how my dad is doing with this round of chemo!  We have great expectations of modern medicine!  One thing I do ask of people reading this and the ones who come around my dad, if you are sick or feeling under the weather...or even if you have been around sick people, we ask that you get better before seeing him!  His numbers are fine now, but during the course of the next couple weeks we expect his numbers to drop, which will lower his immune system (his body won't be able to fight off the common cold as easy as me and you).
Thank you again and hope everyone is enjoying the warm (ish) weather we are having!!!!

The last week....

Dad is doing much better!  He got his kidney stones blasted out last Wednesday and seems to be in better spirits!  Tomorrow we go for a follow-up and to get the stint removed!  We have been having more good days than bad days lately and he is eating a lot better too!  In a couple weeks we will go get another PET scan (which will show us if there is anymore growth, and how much of the cancer is gone). Although we are excited for this scan, it also brings us some fear.  But we are staying positive and just taking everyday one at a time!
I personally would like to thank everyone who has been keeping an eye on this blog and passing it on!  It means a lot to me and our family!  I know my dad has touched a lot of peoples hearts throughout the years and this is amazing to see how many people are following this!  I also would like to thank everyone for all of the support we have gotten throughout the past couple months.  Its amazing how quickly things can change!
Thank you again everyone, and I will keep you all updated!!!!!!

Hospital Visit

This past weekend dad was having some pain in his back.  Sunday it got unbearable and mom took him to the Urgent Care.  Come to find out he has another kidney stone which is about 1/2 of an inch.  He was transferred to St. Joes Mercy in Ann Arbor Sunday night.  This morning I went up there and stayed with him, he received a stint that goes from his kidney to his bladder.  Its there to keep it open so that the stone doesn't block his urethra (which is what it was doing). This is just a temporary fix, he will need to get it blasted out in the very near future.  After he woke up he was feeling so much better!  He was joking around with me and getting out of bed!  He also received 2 units of blood because his red blood cells were low.  Once he was given permission to eat he really couldn't because of the burning in his esophagus.  Mom ended up coming up after she got off work and sat with us and had dinner with me.  He is doing much better and we are hoping he will come home tomorrow.
We will keep everyone updated on his progress!!!

The end of the beginning

Hello everyone!!  Well today was dads last day of chemo and radiation for the next month!  He probably won't do any more radiation, but he will most likely start chemo again.  In the next month he will still be tired and warn out just because the radiation and chemo are built up in his system!  He is having trouble eating today because his esophagus is burned and irritating him right now.  Other than that and the normal tiredness he is doing good!
We are happy to say he no longer needs his blood pressure medications, his bp has been great!  We did have to get fluids one day last week because his bp dropped..but it went up and he felt fine!  This next month will be kind of tough due to the fact that he will be coming down from the radiation and chemo.  His body has gotten used to it for the past 2 months and he will be very tired and worn down.
Dad finally shaved off his beard...we knew it was coming after he shaved his head!  He looks good, and we are all aware it will grow back, it is a little bit of an adjustment to us all because we have never seen him without one.  The ladies at radiation were poking fun of him and calling him baby face :)
We are all doing good, staying busy as usual!
Again this is going to be a short one, hope everyone is doing well!

Update!!

First off I would like to apologize for how long it has taken me to update everyone!  We have had a couple ups and downs lately!  A couple weeks ago our cousin Greg from TN came up for a weekend.  We all had a good weekend celebrating mine and my brothers birthdays!  Then last weekend we had our aunt and uncle up from Missouri for the weekend!  It was really good for dad and he had a great time!
We are coming to the end of all of the treatments, and the wait for more test results is starting to set in.  Dad has shaved his head due to his hair starting to fall out...he looks really good though!  We have learned how to control his cough a lot better, but it seems to really catch up with him at night!  Other than that he is doing fairly good!  His attitude and appetite have both increased and become healthy again!  We are all very proud of him and very thankful for everyday we have with him!
The doctors have decided to take off 2 of dads radiations.  This is because some of the levels of his lung function that they watch during treatment has reached higher than it should.  Which means dad is in a higher percentile of something happening to him with his lungs and heart.  I apologize that this is so vague and it might not make sense... I had the doctor explain it twice to me and still this is all I got out of it.  I will try to learn more about it and fill everyone in!
We are all holding up pretty good!  We all have bonded a little more throughout this whole experience and has brought us closer together!  We are very thankful for all of our friends and family who have been there for us through all of this as well!
So the count down begins 5-6 more radiations and 2 more weeks of chemo!!!!!
Thank you everyone again for everything and I hope everyone is having a safe and fun St. Pattys Day!

Chemo....Treatment 2

We are at our second chemo treatment as we speak!!!  Dad is more tired than he has been, unfortunately!  But that could also be because of the benydryl they gave him!  He has been getting more sleep since the doctor prescribed a little stronger cough medicine! We also found out today that he has 23 more radiation treatments left and then we are done with that mess!!  We are also very impressed with how well everyone helps out and how informative everyone is here at the cancer center!  My dad actually  knows one of the volunteers and he comes and visits us when we are here!  So it makes for a nice day to see a friendly face!  The nurses here have started calling me 'the boss.'  They give me all of the paper work and know if my dad forgets something I either have it or know it!  :-)  I try to stay up on everything so if they need to know something, I know the answer or I can find the answer within a decent amount of time!  We are amazed at how much we all are learning through this whole process!!  Its school all over again!

We have noticed that dad has been having more good days than bad days lately!  On Sunday him and my mom went out for breakfast with some friends, and went for a drive later on!  It was great to see him up when they stopped by my work!!  All of us girls included have been dealing with it better and talking amongst ourselves to share feelings!  It really has helped us all!  I'm sure we all have our moments, but for the most part we are all doing great!

I would like to send out a bunch of thanks!  First off to TDM-Dads work!!!  We all greatly appreciate everything!!  And to Garrett Graham-thank you so much for help on dads truck!!!

I don't have a cute quote or poem for you today... I will have two for you all next time!!!  Thank you again for everyone praying and thinking of us in this time!!!!

Have a great day!!!!

What we have been waiting for...finally!!!

As I'm updating everyone dad is actually receiving his first round of chemo!!  He is sitting right next to me all hooked up to everything!  The nurses are really nice here and very informative!!  Dad had 3 different premeds, and we are still working on his first chemo.. he will get a second one today as well, but because of the different types we can only do one at a time!  Chrissy (the baby) is on her way up here to visit!

Dad has been doing ok... finally getting his appetite back a little!  He has had a really bad cough the past 2 weeks, but with all the research we have read, we believe its a side effect of the radiation... We have tried different meds and are working on finding a comfortable solution to this problem!

It is still very unreal to me to see his name on a chemo order!  It just doesn't feel real!  I'm still waiting to wake up...but I also realize that this isn't just something you wake up from!  And I have realized I can't expect everyone to understand..or even begin to understand where we are coming from and what we are feeling!  I have strengthened a lot of my beliefs and my goals because of all of this!

I'm very proud of my dad with how far he has already come with everything! It is great seeing him with an appetite and wanting something to eat!  We are home now and done with the treatments today..his next chemo will be next wednesday.

Again I want to thank everyone for everything!

Here is a poem I'm leaving everyone with!  I see it in a lot of places in the cancer center and I have heard it before when I had a friend going through cancer as well.

What Cancer Cannot Do

Cancer is so limited...
It cannot cripple love.
It cannot shatter hope.
It cannot corrode faith.
It cannot eat away peace.
It cannot destroy confidence.
It cannot kill friendship.
It cannot shut out memories.
It cannot silence courage.
It cannot reduce eternal life.
It cannot quench the Spirit.

The Starting line!!!

Ok, I have a lot to update about!!!  Yesterday was a busy day for my dad and I..starting at 5am (anyone who knows me knows I'm not the best morning person)...and we finally got home at 4pm!!!  First we started out in Ann Arbor and dad received his port!  He did great with that, and when they brought me back to recovery he was already eating!!  Once we were able to leave we came back to Brighton and went to the Woodland Center..which is where dad will be receiving his chemo and radiation-very close to home!  The treatment will be very intense...He will be doing 30 days of radiation (starting today) and that will be Monday-Friday.  He starts chemo next week and will receive it once a week during radiation.  After radiation is completed he will be doing more chemo treatments!  He is taking a combination of two different chemos, they are small doses now and when he is done with radiation they will bump it up!

Well I started this blog yesterday and because of work and dads treatment, I couldn't get back to it. So here I am!  My dads first round of radiation went well yesterday!  Last night he developed a horrible cough again!  It has gotten pretty bad in the last couple of hours, unfortunately.  Other than that he is doing pretty good!

We are all trying to stay healthy around the house, and get ready for our uncles to come up tomorrow!  We are so excited and like I said before-believe it will be really good for dad!  Chrissy just got over a cold and is doing better!!! We are also very thankful for our family friend Anita!! She made us an amazing lasanga the other night, and that is the most I have seen my dad eat in one sitting (and even a whole day) in about 3 weeks!  So thank you very much Anita-it was delicious!!!  My grandmother also made us a pineapple upside down cake last week, which is dads favorite!  We all loved it!!! Thank you grandma!!!!!

Again I would like to thank all of the support we are getting from everyone!!!  A question I am asked a lot is if my dad is up to seeing people, or getting visits..or people don't call because they don't know how he feels.  It doesn't matter!!  If you feel like calling him, call him.. he won't answer if he isn't feeling up to it!  I know he loves talking to people, so please don't hesitate to call my dad!  Like I said if he is sleeping or under the weather, he won't answer and will call you back when he is feeling up to it!

As for the rest of us, we are all doing pretty good!!  Just staying busy and getting a lot of things done around the house!  I hope everyone takes care and I will update this weekend!!!

1 Day at a Time!!!

Since my last post we have found out how much radiation dad will be getting!! Dad will be going through 30 days of radiation.  They will be attacking the lung tumor, and the spots they found on his liver!  On Tuesday we are going in to get his port put in (which is a device they will implant just under his skin on his chest so they won't have to keep poking him with needles in the arm. This will put the chemo straight into his bloodstream- many people are given this when going through chemo to make it easier and more convenient.).  Tuesday is also his first day of radiation, and they day we will find out how much chemo he will be getting too!  We will find out a lot of information on Tuesday and I will definatly keep everyone posted!!!

Dad has had a hard time sleeping lately.  He still has the cough every once in a while, but not as bad as it was!   We are still in the process of trying to find a hobby for him to do to keep him moving and occupied during this time!

We are very excited for next weekend as well!  Although we will have a busy week before hand, we are so excited that my dads uncles (my great uncles) will be coming up to visit us for the weekend from Missouri!  We are excited and it should be really good for dad!!  And we are also hoping for a visit from an old neighbor sometime in the near future as well!  We are excited and extremely blessed to have all these people in our lives!!  I know Pat Carol (our old neighbor) is following this-we would love to see you!!!  And to Uncle Paul (I know your following too) we are very excited to see you and Uncle Charles next weekend!  Can you bring some crappie (fish) with you?!?!  I'm just kidding!!!!!

I have decided to end every blog with a quote, or prayer of some sort!  So to everyone take care and stay in touch!!!!

The Verdict...

So Friday we had an appointment to get the results of dads MRI and PET scan.... Not good!  We found out that he is in the 4th stage of cancer...for those who don't know what that means- it means that the cancer has spread and is not cure able-but treatable for the time being!  It has spread into his liver and lymph nodes.  This was a complete blow to us.  Our doctor is taking my dads case infront of the 'tumor board' on monday where they will come up with a chemo/radiation combination for him.  The doctor is sure we can't operate on it because it has spread into the liver.

When this kind of news hits a family, some people are caught of guard and are in denial.  For me, being in the medical field for a while I have learned that it is what it is. There is no way you can prepare yourself for something like this, or prepare yourself when you walk into an oncologists office.  Nothing no one says can make it better or 'softer' to be said.  All we need is people to stand by us and to be there for us, whether its to talk, to cry, or just sit there with someone.

As for how we are all doing, we are still digesting the information... Dad is doing better, his cough finally went away...now he is in the process of preparing himself mentally for what is to come.  We are all trying to stay busy and keep ourselves going mentally and physically!  It hits me in waves and sometimes its harder than others to control my emotions..but other than that I'm ok!

In times like these you tend to find your faith, or bring it back out.  I find myself constantly thinking about a certain prayer, and it comes to my mind whenever I start thinking about what is to come, and I share this with you tonight!

Good Night Everyone!! And thank you for all of the support!

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

A Little Delay....

Ok, well I wanted to let everyone know we won't have any results till next Tuesday... I know I  said he had the appointment today, but yesterday his PET scan got canceled so we had to reschedule the big appointment.  As frustrating as it is waiting a little longer, we are doing ok.

Dad has been fighting a cough for the last 3 days!  He is sore from the constant coughing..but other than that he is doing good!

I can't say this enough, but thank you for all of the support and prayers we are getting!!!!!!

For Starters

Ok, I'm pretty sure a lot of people already know by now, but if you don't I'm Michelle Peardon...Joes oldest daughter... I decided to start this blog because we have family all over, and friends who we would like to keep informed during this time.  I will be posting after every major appointment and randomly to keep everyone updated on how we are all doing!

On Tuesday, January 11, 2011 my dad (joe) was diagnosed with lung cancer (squamus cell carcinoma),  The tumor was found in his left lung.  We are still in the very early stages of finding out information and such and ways to treat this!  We have an appointment on Tuesday that will tell us our options for the best results!  We were taken by surprise when we found out, and it has been a rough couple weeks!  But we are very thankful for all of the support we already have from our family members and friends!  We know this is going to be a long process, and we are positive we will get through this!  We are a strong family and no sickness can bring us down!

A little about us...I'm Michelle, the oldest daughter.  There is David and Scott (my dads son and grandson), and also Angie and Chrissy (they are my dads youngest daughters).  And Joanne is our mom!  Just so no one gets confused during this whole blog thingy!

Like I had said before this took us by surprise and we are still figuring a lot of information out!

I will keep everyone updated!  And all we ask is that everyone say some extra prayers for us!!!
